Alex chewed her fingernail as she went looking for Calin.

Talk about a bombshell.

She sighed and shook her head. Marek was in one hell of a spot.

Does Calin know?

Aye.

Both? That you love him as well?

Aye.

To be able to work with him so closely, to place his own feelings last, it had to hurt. Constantly.

She didn’t know how he did it.

Calin does love you, you know. It’s obvious to anyone looking.

That’s not the kind of love I want from him, Alex.

She could understand that, too.

It’s all right. Really. I learned how to deal with this a long time ago. If the goddess is kind, I will find someone one day. In the meantime, I serve and I do it wholeheartedly. There’s nowhere else I want to be.

But … What about things between me and Calin? Won’t that—

No. I want that. If you two find common ground? If you … fall in love? I couldn't ask for more. To see two people find the threads of their Fated bond? I’d be honored to be there to witness it. I could never, and would never, come between that, between you. You both mean too much to me. I mean, Rhess and him. And now you of course, too.

He’d scraped at his face and shook his head.

This is harder than I thought it would be. The terms. You and Rhess.

Alex had nodded, then grinned at him. You're not the one with the split personality.

He’d laughed then.

She spotted Calin in the kitchen, hunched over a low cupboard. A pang of longing hit her deep in the belly. He glanced up and she smiled at him, unable to help herself. Nervous uncertainty flickered in his eyes, then cleared. A hesitant smile widened his lush mouth as she watched.

Clambering up onto a high stool, she watched Calin continue rummaging around in the cupboard.

“I saw you out there with Marek.”

It was a question, yet not.

Was that the origin of the concern? The uncertainty she’d seen in his eyes? Did he think she preferred the Battle Commander’s company to his?

“Yes?”

He hesitated, then pulled out a sealed packet and tossed it on the bench. He didn’t meet her gaze.

“I'm glad you two are getting to know each other.”

Alex tilted her head. The softly spoken words seemed to be the truth, and yet …

“He was upset. I comforted him.”

Calin hadn’t asked, but she was going to explain anyway. She didn’t want any misconceptions between them. No silly misunderstandings or issues. They had enough of those to last two lifetimes without adding misguided jealousy or worry to it.

Calin looked up sharply. “Is he all right? Should I speak with him?”

Alex shook her head. “He’s fine now. It was just something that came up in conversation.”

She bit her bottom lip, wondering just how much she should reveal, if anything. She noticed Calin's gaze caught on the action. Heat filled his eyes.

She shifted on her stool, even more aware of every move he made.

“He was worried about you.”

Calin blinked in surprise, coming back to the present.
